Do You Suffer From Bruxism – Grinding Of The Teeth?

Do you grind or clench your teeth on a regular basis? We all do it sometimes, especially if we’re anxious, and it won’t cause complications for most people. Problems occur when you grind your teeth constantly, a condition known as bruxism. In most cases, bruxism won’t cause serious problems but, in acute cases, it can lead to several complications including damage, dysfunction, and pain in the jaw joints, frequent muscle tension headaches, tooth fractures and loss, and even altered facial appearance. Some warning signs of bruxism are:

  • Jaw soreness
  • Fatigued jaw muscles
  • Worn tooth enamel
  • Earaches
  • Headaches
  • Cuts on the inside of cheeks

The root of such symptoms is not always obvious; sometimes people with bruxism don’t even know they have it because they grind their teeth at night. With that in mind, if you’re experiencing any of the above symptoms, you should schedule an appointment with Dr. Schlang.

Treatment For Bruxism

What causes bruxism isn’t completely known, but we do know some things that can aggravate the condition.

  • Reducing stress.
  • Drinking more water.
  • Getting more sleep.
  • Not chewing gum or on other objects.
  • Consciously relaxing the face and jaw throughout the day.
  • Buying a teeth grinding mouth guard.

If the bruxism is severe, mouthguards can prevent further damage, or dental reshaping via dental crowns, braces, Invisalign or oral surgery may be a solution.
